Blepharoplasty is a surgery of eyelids. Lower and upper eye-lids may be operated together or in isolation.
Upper blepharoplasty is one of the most effective surgical treatments in plastic surgery. The procedure itself lasts for about 45 minutes and it is performed under local anaestesia. Excess skin on the upper lid is removed and fat pockets are reduced. Medical tapes which expedite the healing process (though preventing the patients from widely opening their eyes) are taped over the upper lids Patients leave the clinic immediately after the procedure and there is no need for their hospitalization. The follow-up is usually scheduled within one week when the tapes and surgical threads are removed. The patients may experience minor pain, swelling and bruising of lids; otherwise, they may resume their normal daily routine. The scars are virtually invisible as they are located in upper lid’s sulcus. The effects of the procedure are visible as the patients look refreshed.
Lower blepharoplasty is a much more complicated procedure. It requres full anaestesia and lasts for about two hours. Patients are hospitalized for one day after which time they continue to recover at home. Though the pain is not intensive, the swelling and bruising are so it may take up to two weeks before the patients can fully recover and resume their duties. Post-surgical follow-up is scheduled within 3-7 days (when the surgical threads are painlessly removed). Lower blepharoplasty is used to remove excess skin from lower lid(s) and the muscles are tightened. If needed fat pockets are cut of or redistributed. The scars are immediately beneath eye limbus towards the corner of the eye but located inside a fine line which is aesthetically most adequate. Within 24 hours following the procedure cold compresses are advised to reduce swelling. To additionally reduce swelling, two days prior to surgery patients start taking drugs. The procedure is highly effective though the results become fully visible after a few weeks. It should be noted that if the lower lids were dark prior to operation, the surgery will not effect the colour.
